Surgery Day

What to expect before and after surgery

No Early Drop-off or Pick-up
Cat drop-off time is 7:00-7:30 am. They need to be in an appropriate hard sided cat carrier (no wire cages or soft sided carriers). Put newspaper or something absorbent inside (we do not save soiled items). Cat pick-up time is 4:30-5:00 pm.

Dog drop-off time is 7:30-8:00 am. Leave your dog in your vehicle while you come inside to fill out their admission form. For their safety, they will be brought inside one at a time on a leash. Dog pick-up time is 4:00-4:30 pm.

Before Your Pet’s Appointment
No food after midnight but water is fine up to the morning before you leave home.

After Your Pet Returns Home
Although your pet may experience some discomfort after surgery, your veterinarian can take measures to control pain. Depending on the procedure performed, medication for pain may be sent home with your pet. Here are tips for a safe and comfortable recovery:

Provide your pet with a quiet place to recover indoors and away from other animals.

Prevent your pet from running and jumping for up to two weeks following surgery, or as long as your veterinarian recommends.

Prevent your pet from licking the incision site, which may cause infection, by using a well fitted Elizabethan collar.

Avoid bathing your pet for at least ten days after surgery.

Check the incision site daily to confirm proper healing.

If you notice any redness, swelling or discharge at the surgery site, or if the incision is open, please contact your veterinarian. Also call your veterinarian if your pet is lethargic, has a decreased appetite, is vomiting or has diarrhea or any other concerns following surgery.
